Arias Vocal Ensembles Box 12Today’s CD is a fest of rolling Rs.

It wasn’t compelling enough to stop my mind from wandering (isn’t that a line from a Beatles song?). But it was entertaining.

A few selections from the Marriage of Figaro are represented here. And more songs from the superb Eva Lind. (I wonder if she’s related to Jenny Lind, the famous Swedish Nightingale?) And some nice duets with sopranos and tenors. Track 13 (Caro mio Druck und Schluck, K.App.5/K.571a) was especially interesting. Two male vocalists, one soprano (Julie Kaufmann). Quirky sounding. Like Track 14 (Nun, liebes Weibchen, ziehst mit mir, K.625/K.592a) performed by a male vocalist and soprano Eva Lind. It’s just really odd-sounding music.

Very opera.

Here is what I listened to today, complete with the best guesses of scholars regarding where and when each composition was penned. This information was pieced together from The Compactothèque book + CD, which is an essential purchase if you want the fullest enjoyment from the Philips Complete Mozart Edition. It’s only about $8 and the sampler CD, alone, is remarkably enjoyable. But the booklet is gold, Jerry! Gold! Keep in mind, some of these places and dates are merely guesses. But I find it fascinating to see even guesses for some of these compositions. They help me put Mozart’s life and creative output in perspective.

For example, Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756. With that in mind, take a look at where and when these pieces were composed. I’ll add Mozart’s approximate age in the parenthetical data below each composition:

I didn’t have a favorite today. It was interesting music. But not the kind I’d turn to for active listening. And what’s the point of music like this for passive listening?
